Wilton Electrical Services: Mike Amato brings power to town

For more than 20 years Mike Amato has been bringing electricity to homes in Wilton and surrounding communities. As the owner of Wilton Electrical Services at 237 Danbury Road, Mr. Amato helps bring light and power to homes, old and new.

“My dad started it in 1975,” Mr. Amato said of the business.

Wilton Electrical Services was started in the Amato home on Coley Road. In the early 1980s, Sal Amato took another job, keeping the business, but his partner continued to run it.

In the meantime, Mr. Amato graduated from technical school, finished his apprenticeship as an electrician, and earned a master’s degree. He then decided to continue running the business his dad started, and bought both owners out.

“When I was growing up … on summer vacations and weekends I used to help my dad out,” Mr. Amato said about his early interest in electrical work.

The job has changed a lot over the years Mr. Amato said. When his dad started working in 1975, there were a few builders to work with while planning out a new build. Now, Mr. Amato said there are almost too many to count.

The workers at Wilton Electrical Services have to keep up with the latest trends, Mr. Amato said. Many homes especially in Wilton have heated floors and another addition since this past winter when the power went out — generators.

“I like the satisfaction of working with people,” Mr. Amato said of his career. But after a pause he added “starting a job from paper [planning] to completion,” is really what keeps the work fun.

Mr. Amato said since he bought the company in 1986, it has grown from one van to six. There are 10 employees (not including himself and his wife.)

Most recently, Mr. Amato was the lead electrician on Extreme Makeover: Home Edition during the television’s recent show in Bridgeport. The episode is scheduled to air on ABC Sunday, Sept. 30, at 8 p.m. In all, there were 3,000 volunteers to help rebuild the home.

Mr. Amato took other electricians from Wilton including Ely Electric, Vado Electric and Charney Electric.

“It’s got everything,” Mr. Amato said of the Bridgeport home. The home is 3,500 square feet, with a detached garage and a gazebo in the back yard. He couldn’t go into too many details because the show has yet to air.

Mr. Amato and his wife, Donna, and their kids, Nicole, 10, and John, 7, live in Wilton.

Mr. Amato is working on getting a Web site up and running, and hopes to have it online soon.
