American Cancer Society event launches women's initiative
|
More than 90 women attended the American Cancer Society’s First Annual Women and Company “Caring Connections” luncheon at The Fairfield County Hunt Club in Westport recently.
The luncheon launched the society’s Women’s Initiative, which seeks to engage women throughout Fairfield County in the programs and services of the American Cancer Society. The luncheon will be an annual event to provide wellness information on cancer-related and general health topics. The initiative will also present a series of three educational seminars throughout the year.
“There is ample evidence that women are the caregivers in our society, but there is equal evidence universally that women often become so absorbed in caring for others that they forget to take care of themselves,” said Madelyn Ringgold, a member of the American Cancer Society’s Women’s Cabinet. “Women and Company was created by women and for women. We strive to engage women from all walks of life and all stages of life with a common goal to create the caring connections that can provide hope and help.”
The luncheon featured talks by Linda Mowad, project director of the Yale Cancer Center’s Cancer Information Service of New England, and Melissia Petro, vice president of government relations and advocacy. The luncheon also included a presentation by Joyce Saltman, professor of special education at Southern Connecticut State University and author and of The Therapeutic Value of Laughter.
“This was an excellent first step in a new and exciting endeavor for the American Cancer Society,” said Gayle Alswanger, major gifts officer for the society.
