Wilton Library’s Hot & Cool Jazz heats up with duo’s concert

Wilton Library’s Hot & Cool: Jazz at the Brubeck Room heats up with bassist Michael Moore and guitarist Gene Bertoncini in a special performance on Sunday, March 2, at 4. Mr. Moore and Mr. Bertoncini have performed together for seven years at nearly year-round Sunday concerts at Zinno, in Greenwich Village.

Mr. Moore, the most recent member of the Dave Brubeck Quartet, is an acknowledged master of his instrument, as well as a leader of his own duo and trio that feature the bass as a solo instrument. Born in Cincinnati, he started his musical training at the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music. After joining the Woody Herman band at age 20, he recorded and performed with such jazz artists as Marian McPartland, Bill Evans, Stan Getz, Chet Baker, John Scofield, Tony Bennett, and many others. John S. Wilson of The New York Times called Mr. Moore “one of the most consistently brilliant bassists in recent history.” Mr. Moore is also adjunct professor at William Patterson University and Long Island University.

Gene Bertoncini is one of the pre-eminent jazz guitarists performing today. His techniques have won him international praise and accolades as the “Segovia of jazz,” comparing his pure acoustic sound to the classical Spanish guitarist, Andres Segovia. A versatile improviser, Mr. Bertoncini has been heard with a range of jazz greats, including performances and recordings with Benny Goodman, Buddy Rich, Wayne Shorter, Hubert Laws and Paul Desmond among others. He has accompanied singers such as Tony Bennett, Lena Horne, Nancy Wilson, Vic Damone and Eydie Gorme. According to The New Yorker, “Bertoncini is an affecting, highly original guitarist who moves easily back and forth between classical and jazz guitar.” Mr. Bertoncini is a teacher at Eastman School of Music, William Patterson University and Long Island University. He is a New York City native.

Wilton Library’s Hot & Cool: Jazz at the Brubeck Room series is funded by the William and Karen Tell Foundation with special thanks to Ed and Catherine Romer. A reception follows the hour-long performance on Sunday. Advance registration is strongly suggested and pre-registrants must arrive by 3:50 p.m. to be guaranteed seating. Wait-listed and walk-in registrants will be admitted after 3:50 if space is available. Suggested donation for the concert is $10 per person.
