Wilton Continuing Education offers new look and courses

Wilton Continuing Education kicks off its Summer Learning Program on June 23 with a new theme and an entirely new look. “Add Color to Your Summer” is this year’s theme and the program’s cover is a tessellated design with various shapes and sizes similar to a mosaic. The brochure was sent out to Wilton residences the second week in March.

The registration process has already begun and the response to new offerings has been very satisfying, according to program organizers.

The offerings include an array of classes for students entering kindergarten through middle school and college prep classes for the high school set. The program has expanded course offerings based upon feedback from the 2007 Summer Learning Program.

Included are more courses for students entering kindergarten, a clay class after school program and other classes such as songwriting, a Webkinz class and even a cheerleading clinic.

Will Mathews, a Middlebrook School social studies teacher, will be teaching a new course, Digital Video Production, and students will use Windows Movie Maker.

The old favorites are being offered such as knitting, martial arts, Irish dance, cartooning and the ever-popular baby-sitting certification which is taught by a certified American Red Cross instructor. Also, Dave McCue will be back with new recipes and he’ll be cooking up a storm with Kids in the Kitchen and Young Chefs.

Last year, the program offered a new class called Crafts and Stories of the American Girl Dolls, which was a great success. Pam Moffat, a second grade teacher in Ridgefield, develops and teaches the class. It was so popular that it is being offered as an after school enrichment class during the school year.

While the majority of classes entertain, some classes help to reinforce concepts from the classroom. Classes like Keyboarding, Math Skills, Creative Writing and Timed Writing focus on the ERB and CMT.

There will also be express courses for the college bound. The program has always offered SAT prep for the high school group through adult education and now is offering both an SAT and ACT prep class this summer. More and more colleges are requiring students to take the ACT. These prep courses have been designed specifically for Continuing Education and are express courses which are well-priced and slightly shorter in duration. The goal is to prepare the student for the fall tests and work closely with the high school guidance office to address the needs of students.

All classes are held at Middlebrook School.
