Congressman Shays continues fight against FAA flight plan

Congressman Christopher Shays, Republican of the 4th District, and several other members of Congress have signed a joint letter to the FAA’s acting administrator, Robert Sturgell, in opposition to the airspace redesign plan which will affect the local area.

In a press release, Mr. Shays said the letter asks for a halt to the plan until further safety studies have been done.

The letter said the plan has overlooked consequences relating to noise, air quality, and other environmental impacts for communities in the states of Connecticut, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania.

The letter was initiated by Mr. Shays, and signed by Congressmen Rob Andrews, Democrat of New Jersey, Scott Garrett, Republican of New Jersey, and Joe Sestak, Democrat of Pennsylvania, along with 10 other members.

On Dec. 19, 2007, the FAA began implementation of the airspace redesign plan in the New York metropolitan region, the first of several airspace redesign sites throughout the country. According to the FAA, the plan is intended to reduce flight delays starting with the New York metropolitan region.

The members’ letter said the FAA’s plan is incomplete and did not properly evaluate the harmful environmental and noise impacts on communities in the FAA’s flight path.

Wilton and other area towns have formed the Alliance for Sensible Airspace Planning, filing suit against the FAA in conjunction with state and regional efforts to halt the redesign.
