Andrew Knapp honored for years of Memorial Day parade support

Children’s eyes might get a little wider this Memorial Day when an authentic, active duty Vietnam helicopter comes rolling down the road during the town’s annual parade.
Pulled by trailer, as its engine was dismantled by the government after the war, the helicopter — a freshly painted UH1M Huey — provides just the newest in a long line of military vehicles Andrew Knapp, co-owner of Knapp Trees in Wilton, has provided for parade watchers over many years.
At a ceremony on May 1, Mr. Knapp of Redding was honored by the Memorial Day Parade Committee and First Selectman William Brennan for his years of support to the town’s Memorial Day parade. Mr. Brennan presented a proclamation to Mr. Knapp, recognizing his continued support.
“It’s a combat return that was in two tours of Vietnam and then came back to the Vermont National Guard,” said Mr. Knapp of the newest addition to his collection, which includes half-tracks, Jeeps and other military equipment.
On Monday, May 26, after it has finished its tour through Wilton’s Memorial Day parade, perhaps loaded with some lucky kids or veterans in the seats in back and gunner’s perch, Mr. Knapp’s Huey will then head up the road to Ridgefield for that town’s parade.
In all, his vehicles will be in 16 Memorial Day parades this year.
While the rising cost of gas has certainly made his involvement a bit more expensive this year, Mr. Knapp said he provides the equipment for the parades because he enjoys sharing his collection with others.
