Nursing & Home Care offering stroke screening Tuesday at Comstock

Nursing & Home Care will conduct its annual Stroke Risk Screening on Tuesday, May 13, from 8:30 to 11:30 at the Comstock Community Center, 180 School Road.

The purpose of the screening is to identify individuals over 50 who may be at risk for ischemic stroke. The screening includes the National Stroke Foundation’s Stroke Risk Assessment, blood pressure, BMI assessment, lipid profile, carotid bruit assessment, and a stroke risk counseling session with a registered nurse.

“Nursing & Home Care is committed to increasing public awareness about stroke risk and prevention in the communities we serve,” said Sharon M. Bradley, president and CEO of Nursing & Home Care.

According to the American Stroke Association, most impending ischemic strokes can be treated with a drug that dissolves blood clots and restores blood flow to the brain. For the drug to work effectively, it must be administered within three hours of the first sign of stroke symptoms. Awareness of stroke risks and the early warning signs of stroke are important.

Warning signs of impending stroke include:

• Sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm, or leg, especially on one side of the body.

• Sudden confusion, including difficulty speaking or understanding.

• Sudden difficulty seeing in one or both eyes.

• Sudden difficulty walking, dizziness, or loss of balance.

• Sudden, severe headache with no known cause.

The entire stroke risk screening takes about 30 minutes. Screenings are by appointment only and space is limited. The cost is $20.
