Deadline approaching for senior tax relief applications

Seniors and those who are totally disabled in town may be eligible for tax relief, and if so, the deadline for filing an application for that relief is next Thursday, May 15.

All applications should be brought to the assessor’s office in town hall. Both the town and the state have relief programs.

In order to be eligible for town tax relief benefits a homeowner must:

• Be 65 years of age or over or have a spouse who is 65 years of age or over as of Dec. 31, 2007. There is no age requirement for the totally disabled.

• Have been a taxpayer to the town of Wilton for one year prior to receiving property tax relief.

• Have lived in Wilton for more than 183 days during the 12 months prior to the filing of his/her application.

• Have gross income plus Social Security and all other forms of income lower than $76,701.

Tax credits will range from $1,000 to $3,500 for qualifying income of $59,900 or less. Deferrals will range from 75% to 100% of tax due. Deferral percentages represent the maximum allowed for corresponding qualifying income. Qualified applicants may elect to defer a lower percentage. Applicants may take advantage of both the credit and deferral for income of $59,900 or less.

To be eligible for state tax relief, residents must:

• Homeowners or their spouses must be 65 years of age or over as of Dec. 31, 2007. There is no age requirement for the totally disabled.

• Have been a Connecticut resident at least one year prior to the filing of the application.

• Meet the following income requirements: Married – adjusted gross income, plus tax exempt income and Social Security of $36,500 or less; Single – adjusted gross income, plus tax exempt income and Social Security of $29,800 or less.

The town tax relief program requires an annual filing. The state tax relief program requires a filing every two years. Proof of income must accompany the application (federal income tax return for 2007 or all proofs of income if no income tax return is filed). In either case, a Social Security 1099 must be submitted.

Totally disabled homeowners must bring proof of 100% Social Security disability rating.
