The Fairfield County Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation’s (JDRF) annual spring gala, Journey to a Cure, held Saturday, March 29, at The Hilton in Stamford, helped raise more than $1.25 million toward furthering research for juvenile diabetes. The evening emcee was Brian Kenny, an ESPN sportscaster, who has a 13-year old daughter with type 1 diabetes.

Christine Winrow of Wilton and Trisha Lewis of Bethel were co-chairs of the event. This year’s honorees were Chris and Terri Walker of Rowayton, and their family. Many previous honorees were also in attendance, including Bernice and Dave Scherb, of Redding; Louis and Virginia Bantle, Marjorie and Rick Fuscone and Mimi and Barry Sternlicht, all of Greenwich; Rosemarie and Robert Obernier and Frank and Jody Osborn, of New Canaan.

The special guest speaker was Adam Kaye of Westport, a Yale fourth-year medical student who served as the evening’s diabetes ambassador. Mr. Kaye spoke about his journey with type 1 diabetes since he diagnosed himself about two years ago.

This year’s entertainment featured belly dancers and theme-inspired cocktails, dining, dancing, and a silent and live auction. The Kids’ Art project, Hand in Hand, a photographic quilt of henna designs painted on children’s hands, was sold in the live auction for $10,000.

JDRF, the world’s leading charitable funder of type 1 diabetes research, was founded in 1970 by the parents of children with juvenile diabetes, a disease which strikes children suddenly, makes them insulin-dependent for life, and carries the constant threat of devastating complications. Since its inception, JDRF has provided more than $1 billion in direct funding to diabetes research. JDRF’s mission is to find a cure for diabetes and treat its complications through the support of research.
