Wilton teen planning a Walk for Parkinsons at Allen's Meadow

Want to go for a walk?

Brett Bassock, a freshman at Wilton High School, is teaming up with the American Parkinson’s Disease Association to host the first Walk for Parkinson’s of Wilton, which is slated to be held in late September at Allen’s Meadow.

Brett decided to get involved in fund raising after his grandmother’s Parkinson’s worsened dramatically following the death of her husband in December.

He started a group on facebook.com where 17 cents will be donated to Michael J. Fox’s Foundation for Parkinson’s Research for each member who joins. There are now more than 6,000 members.

He began planning the walk in January, and said a student committee held its first meeting on Tuesday.

“I’ve started a committee of about 10 Wilton High School students,” Brett said, adding Ms. Korn and Ms. Woitkowski are the committee’s two faculty advisers.

The charity event will feature activities such as face painting, but for 30 minutes all the activities will be shut down as those in attendance will walk around the park.

“We’re going to make a little track,” he said. “We still need sponsors and people to donate funds.”

“We’re also looking for more adult committee members to help plan it,” Brett said.
